Hauling Road Dust Suppressant
Hauling road dust suppressant for mine haul roads in Indonesia: road condition assessment, product selection, water truck application planning, site trials, and performance monitoring.
PT Beta Pramesti Asia supplies hauling road dust suppressant programs for unpaved mine haul roads in Indonesia. A hauling road dust suppressant is a dust control agent applied to the surface of haul roads, the roads used by heavy vehicles such as mining dump trucks to carry coal, ore, overburden, or sand. The right program binds fine particles on the road surface so they are not easily lifted by tyres and wind, and is selected based on road material, traffic intensity, weather, water availability, and the application equipment on site.
Why does haul road dust need to be controlled?
Haul road dust forms when heavy vehicle tyres grind the road surface and release fine particles, which vehicle turbulence and wind then carry into the air. Consistent control helps with:
- Operational safety: better operator visibility, especially at bends, intersections, and two-way traffic areas.
- Worker and community health: lower dust exposure for operators, field crews, and settlements along the haul road.
- Road and equipment life: a bound surface loses fines more slowly, reducing the need for grading and resheeting, as well as wear on air filters and vehicle components.
- Water efficiency: water alone evaporates quickly, so water trucks must make repeated passes. The right chemical program can extend the interval between applications.
- Environmental compliance: supports particulate emission control in line with site environmental requirements and permits.
Types of haul road dust suppressants
| Type | How it works | Advantages | What to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water only | Temporarily wets the surface | Simple and readily available | Short-lived, evaporates quickly, needs repeated watering, and can make roads slippery if overapplied |
| Hygroscopic salts (e.g. CaCl₂, MgCl₂) | Absorb moisture from the air to keep the surface damp | Effective where humidity is sufficient | Can be washed out by rain, may be corrosive to vehicles, and needs review of impacts on water and vegetation |
| Polymers or organic resins (e.g. lignosulfonates, synthetic polymers, enzymatic binders) | Form a binding layer of particles on the road surface | Longer-lasting with fewer applications | Needs surface preparation, curing time, and compatibility with the road material |
| Oil or bitumen-based | Form a dust-sealing layer | High durability under heavy traffic | Environmental impact and slippery surfaces if not properly managed |
No single type is best for every site. Selection should be based on road conditions and control objectives, not only the price per litre.
Factors that determine field performance
- Road material: fines (silt) content, aggregate grading, and how well the surface absorbs the solution.
- Traffic: number of trips, vehicle weight and type, speed, and braking or uphill zones.
- Road geometry: grade, bends, intersections, road width, and drainage.
- Weather: rainfall, dry season, surface temperature, humidity, and wind direction.
- Application system: water truck capacity, spray bar type, pump pressure, water source and quality, and watering routes.
- Road maintenance: grading schedule, material top-up, and pothole repair. Grading after application can break the binding layer if schedules are not aligned.
Application method
- Usually applied with a water truck fitted with a spray bar, using product diluted to the recommended ratio.
- Programs typically start with a more concentrated initial treatment to build the binding layer, followed by periodic maintenance applications.
- The road surface should be graded and compacted before the initial treatment so the solution penetrates evenly.
- Dosage, dilution, and application frequency are set from site data and trial results, not universal figures.
How to select and trial the right program
We recommend a controlled trial before rolling a program out across the haul road network:
- Choose a test segment and a control segment with comparable traffic, material, and weather exposure.
- Record a baseline: visual dust conditions or dust measurements, watering frequency, water consumption, and grading schedule.
- Apply the program according to the agreed dilution plan and water truck route.
- Monitor performance: effective duration between applications, visibility, water and product consumption, and surface condition after rain.
- Compare total cost: weigh product cost against savings in water, water truck operating hours, and road maintenance, not only the product price.
Environmental and safety considerations
Dust suppressant selection should consider toxicity to plants and animals, potential pollution of groundwater or nearby water bodies, biodegradability, corrosion risk to vehicles, and slippery surface risk. Safety data sheets (SDS), storage requirements, and handling procedures should be available to and understood by the field team.
A dust suppressant is one layer of control. It does not replace good road maintenance, vehicle speed management, adequate drainage, dust exposure monitoring, PPE, or the safety and environmental requirements that apply on site.
Beta’s scope of service
PT Beta Pramesti Asia can review haul road conditions, traffic data, water availability, water truck equipment, and performance targets before setting up a trial. Services can include product selection, dilution and application route planning, trial criteria, operator guidance, and performance monitoring.

Frequently asked questions
Is watering alone enough?
Water can suppress dust for a short time, but it evaporates quickly, especially at midday and in the dry season, so water trucks must make repeated passes. A dust suppressant program can extend control duration and reduce water use, once its performance has been proven in a trial.
Do dust suppressants make roads slippery?
Slip risk depends on the product type, dosage, and surface condition. Dilution and application rates therefore need to be controlled, especially on inclines, declines, and bends. We take this into account when designing the program.
How does rain affect performance?
Heavy rain can wash out part of the product, particularly water-soluble types. Programs are usually adjusted to seasonal patterns, for example more frequent applications in the dry season and reapplication after rainy periods.
What data should we prepare for an assessment?
Prepare a haul road map or layout, segment lengths and widths, traffic data and vehicle types, road material type, grading schedule, water truck capacity, water source, and photos or videos of current dust conditions.
